Chapter 4 – Trust tests

In a city subway line where rain always finds them, the story of Umbrella for Two Blocks continues its soft pulse. A shared umbrella becomes a daily commute ritual – and then a reason to miss the next train on purpose. Today, the focus is a plan that goes sideways, proving Grace and Ethan can rely on each other, guided by Tara. Nothing here is loud or cruel; everything is ordinary tenderness: shared errands, careful jokes, and the kind of attention that feels like a light left on.

Grace arrived earlier than planned, pretending it was about schedules and not about hope. The air smelled clean, almost sweet. Grace checked a phone, put it away, and practiced looking calm. When Ethan appeared, the pretend calm cracked into a real smile. “Gray,” Ethan said softly, as if the nickname were a secret password. Grace answered with a nod that meant more than yes.

Ethan carried the day like a careful map. Lists, keys, a joke ready in case silence stretched too long. Ethan noticed the way Grace tucked a loose strand of hair, the way footsteps slowed near familiar doors. “Hey, Eth,” Grace tried, testing the sound. Ethan laughed once, surprised and pleased. Nearby, Tara cleared a throat in the friendliest way possible, as if to say: do not waste this light.

Tara had opinions, of course. Tara always did. “You two act like the world will end if you admit you like the same table,” Tara said, arranging cups or tools or paper with efficient hands. Cousin Tara had seen enough almost-romances to recognize one blooming. “Grace Kim and Ethan Cole could write a guidebook on circling the point,” Tara added, not unkindly. Grace blushed. Ethan pretended to check a watch that did not need checking.
