Chapter 3 – Almost moments

In a passenger ferry between twin harbor towns, the story of Ferry Ticket for One (Accidentally Two) continues its soft pulse. A wrong ticket purchase strands two people on a slow ferry with nothing to do but talk – and share snacks. Today, the focus is a near-miss that leaves Ivy replaying every word Seth said, and Nell calling out the obvious. Nothing here is loud or cruel; everything is ordinary tenderness: shared errands, careful jokes, and the kind of attention that feels like a light left on.

Ivy arrived earlier than planned, pretending it was about schedules and not about hope. The air smelled clean, almost sweet. Ivy checked a phone, put it away, and practiced looking calm. When Seth appeared, the pretend calm cracked into a real smile. “Ives,” Seth said softly, as if the nickname were a secret password. Ivy answered with a nod that meant more than yes.

Seth carried the day like a careful map. Lists, keys, a joke ready in case silence stretched too long. Seth noticed the way Ivy tucked a loose strand of hair, the way footsteps slowed near familiar doors. “Hey, S,” Ivy tried, testing the sound. Seth laughed once, surprised and pleased. Nearby, Nell cleared a throat in the friendliest way possible, as if to say: do not waste this light.

Nell had opinions, of course. Nell always did. “You two act like the world will end if you admit you like the same table,” Nell said, arranging cups or tools or paper with efficient hands. Nell Quinn had seen enough almost-romances to recognize one blooming. “Ivy Morgan and Seth Morgan could write a guidebook on circling the point,” Nell added, not unkindly. Ivy blushed. Seth pretended to check a watch that did not need checking.
