Chapter 6 – Chosen tomorrow

In a sunny boardwalk that smells like salt and sugar, the story of Boardwalk Lemonade Stand continues its soft pulse. Summer jobs, rival lemonade stands, and a heatwave that forces a truce under one striped umbrella. Today, the focus is a clear choice for Cora and Wes, celebrated quietly by Nan in a sunny boardwalk that smells like salt and sugar. Nothing here is loud or cruel; everything is ordinary tenderness: shared errands, careful jokes, and the kind of attention that feels like a light left on.

Cora arrived earlier than planned, pretending it was about schedules and not about hope. The air smelled clean, almost sweet. Cora checked a phone, put it away, and practiced looking calm. When Wes appeared, the pretend calm cracked into a real smile. “Cor,” Wes said softly, as if the nickname were a secret password. Cora answered with a nod that meant more than yes.

Wes carried the day like a careful map. Lists, keys, a joke ready in case silence stretched too long. Wes noticed the way Cora tucked a loose strand of hair, the way footsteps slowed near familiar doors. “Hey, Wesley,” Cora tried, testing the sound. Wes laughed once, surprised and pleased. Nearby, Nan cleared a throat in the friendliest way possible, as if to say: do not waste this light.

Nan had opinions, of course. Nan always did. “You two act like the world will end if you admit you like the same table,” Nan said, arranging cups or tools or paper with efficient hands. Nan Blake had seen enough almost-romances to recognize one blooming. “Cora Blake and Wes Blake could write a guidebook on circling the point,” Nan added, not unkindly. Cora blushed. Wes pretended to check a watch that did not need checking.
