Chapter 3 – Almost moments

In a touristy old town full of similar fountains, the story of The Lost Tour Group continues its soft pulse. A city guide and a tourist who always maps the wrong turn keep finding each other at the same wrong landmarks. Today, the focus is a near-miss that leaves Daisy replaying every word Neil said, and Otto calling out the obvious. Nothing here is loud or cruel; everything is ordinary tenderness: shared errands, careful jokes, and the kind of attention that feels like a light left on.

Daisy arrived earlier than planned, pretending it was about schedules and not about hope. The air smelled clean, almost sweet. Daisy checked a phone, put it away, and practiced looking calm. When Neil appeared, the pretend calm cracked into a real smile. “Daze,” Neil said softly, as if the nickname were a secret password. Daisy answered with a nod that meant more than yes.

Neil carried the day like a careful map. Lists, keys, a joke ready in case silence stretched too long. Neil noticed the way Daisy tucked a loose strand of hair, the way footsteps slowed near familiar doors. “Hey, N,” Daisy tried, testing the sound. Neil laughed once, surprised and pleased. Nearby, Otto cleared a throat in the friendliest way possible, as if to say: do not waste this light.

Otto had opinions, of course. Otto always did. “You two act like the world will end if you admit you like the same table,” Otto said, arranging cups or tools or paper with efficient hands. Otto Voss had seen enough almost-romances to recognize one blooming. “Daisy Flores and Neil Flores could write a guidebook on circling the point,” Otto added, not unkindly. Daisy blushed. Neil pretended to check a watch that did not need checking.
